Skynome Migration Methodology

Journey to S/4HANA on Azure

Seven proven migration paths from ECC to S/4HANA — each with different tradeoffs on timeline, risk, and transformation depth. Find the right path for your enterprise.

Migration Paths

Explore Each Path in Detail

Click any path to see when to choose it, key considerations, and what it means for your landscape.

When to choose

  • Data-centre exit deadline within 6 months
  • ECC still under SAP maintenance or extended support
  • No immediate S/4 conversion budget approved
  • Need Azure benefits (DR, scalability) without changing SAP

Key considerations

  • No functional change — same ECC, same database
  • Requires Azure VM sizing for SAP workloads
  • Must plan for eventual S/4 conversion (no new ECC licences post-2027)
  • Good candidate for Azure Reserved Instances to control cost

When to choose

  • Need cloud benefits quickly but want time for S/4 planning
  • Budget available in phases — cloud migration now, conversion later
  • Want to decommission on-prem hardware before end of lease
  • Running Oracle or DB2 — will convert DB during S/4 phase

Key considerations

  • Phase 1: Lift ECC to Azure (3–6 months)
  • Phase 2: Stabilise and optimise on Azure
  • Phase 3: Convert to S/4HANA (Brownfield or Bluefield)
  • Total program can span 12–24 months across phases

When to choose

  • SAP configuration is mature and well-documented
  • Business processes are stable and don't need redesign
  • Full historical data retention is mandatory (audit, compliance)
  • Organisation prefers evolutionary change over disruption

Key considerations

  • Custom ABAP must pass the SAP Readiness Check — remediation required
  • Database conversion to HANA is part of the process
  • Carries forward technical debt alongside good configuration
  • Extensive regression testing needed for converted processes

When to choose

  • Current SAP landscape is heavily customised and inefficient
  • Business wants a complete process redesign opportunity
  • Merging multiple ECC instances into a single S/4HANA
  • Willing to invest in a longer timeline for a clean outcome

Key considerations

  • All business processes reimplemented from SAP Best Practices
  • Historical data must be migrated manually or archived separately
  • Highest change management effort — every user retrains
  • Opportunity to adopt Clean Core and SAP Fiori from day one

When to choose

  • Some business processes need redesign, others are mature
  • Selective data migration required (not all-or-nothing)
  • Want the speed of brownfield with the cleanliness of greenfield
  • Complex landscape with multiple company codes or modules

Key considerations

  • Requires detailed landscape analysis to decide what to keep vs. rebuild
  • Tools like SNP CrystalBridge or SAP DMLT enable selective transfer
  • Most complex to plan, but gives the best tailored outcome
  • Industry-recommended for enterprises with mixed maturity across modules

When to choose

  • Want to offload infrastructure management to SAP
  • Prefer OPEX subscription over CAPEX infrastructure investment
  • Need bundled BTP, Business Network, and migration tools
  • IT team is lean and prefers a managed operating model

Key considerations

  • SAP manages infra, patching, HA/DR, and HANA administration
  • Customer still owns business process config, integrations, and data governance
  • Runs as S/4HANA Cloud, Private Edition in SAP's subscription
  • Contract typically 3–5 years; consider lock-in and exit terms

When to choose

  • Already invested in Azure (or AWS/GCP) for non-SAP workloads
  • Need VNet peering between SAP RISE and your cloud services
  • Want to use Azure-native analytics, security, and data services
  • Enterprise runs a hybrid model — SAP managed, everything else customer-managed

Key considerations

  • Azure: VNet peering, Entra ID SSO, Power BI, Fabric, Sentinel integration
  • AWS: VPC peering, IAM Identity Center, QuickSight, GuardDuty
  • GCP: Dedicated Interconnect, Cloud Identity, BigQuery, Chronicle
  • RISE does not eliminate cloud architecture — it adds a managed SAP layer
